What does this mean to you?
According to my text, authors say: “Rare is the business executive who knows for sure the exact shapes of his or her marginal physical product schedules, or the precise nature of his or her cost curves. No one can provide an instruction book for instant success in business. What we have presented here is, instead, a set of principles that constitutes a guide to the logic of good decision making.” Discuss some of the “principles” that the authors are talking about? What do they mean by the above quote?? I have 35 minutes for a best response…can you help??
The quote means that the textbook economics provides the methods and principles of ration decisions on the part of business executives the application of which is difficult in real business world. However these principles do give broad indications of the direction of the optimal (rational) decision to maximise profit or minimise costs. So the principles are like choosing output level for production where the marginal costs equal marginal revenue, deploying an input of such quantity that equates marginal revenue productivity and input price (eg. wage rate), equating the ratio of marginal productivities to input price ratios to determine cost minimizing combination of inputs for a gven level of output, etc
But it is not clear why you needed this response at all and in mere 35 minutes. Quite interesting in that sense.
